Jill Scott is the only daughter from her mom Joyce Scott. She was born in Philadelphia in Pennsylvania on April 4, 1972. Her grandmother raised her and she was a sole child. Scott studied at The Philadelphia High School for Girls. Following her graduation in the year 2000, she enrolled at Temple University. She studied secondary education over her time at Temple University while working on two other jobs. The hope was to become an English High School teacher. This dream was however ended when, after three years of studies and as an aide to teachers, she was kicked out of college. She began her career as a spoken-word artist who performed her own works at live poetry readings and eventually linked up together with Amir Quest love Thompson of The Roots. They were able to collaborate as well as co-writing You Got Me. She was first outed as an artiste at a Roots Show. She secured subsequent collaborations with Eric Benet Will Smith Common. She gained more experience on stage as she appeared in the Canada tour of the Broadway production Rent. She was the first signed artist to Hidden Beach Recordings. Hidden Beach Recordings label.
